In 1914, Franz Schaffer began to run his sawmill near the Granitzenbach brook below the castle ruins of Eppenstein. On a modest scale, with 2.000 solid meters of timber per year, on leased property. Three years later, in 1917, Schaffer purchased the premises and subsequently lead the enterprise through world wars and economic crisis.
In 1950, his son Gotthard took over the sawmill and used the period of economic recovery to expand the enterprise. In the seventies, 18 people were employed in the plant and 30 more as woodcutters. The volume of cut timber increased tenfold since the foundation of the enterprise
In 1986, a substantial step towards securing the future was taken, when Schaffer decided to concentrate on processing large dimensioned logs. Johann Schaffer, managing director since 1978 concentrated on this method in order to get “the best out of every log” for his customers.
Since 1999, the Lamellierholzwerk SCHAFFER HOLZ TIROL (TLH) in Silz, a wholly owned subsidiary, is part of the company.
In 2008, SCHAFFER HOLZ acquired 51% in the Slovenian sawmill SEGA žaga d.o.o. for large dimensional timber and took a further step in the direction of expanding and upgrading its core competence.
Today SCHAFFER HOLZ employs about 160 persons at three production sites supplying renowned domestic and foreign wood processing companies.
